Dr. Alice Christie's NECC 2009 Workshop

Workshop Overview

Hands-on Workshop in which K-12 teachers create mapping mash-ups that incorporate authentic data, digital photography, voice notes, and location-based research to engage, empower, and motivate 21st century learners.

Teachers will see numerous examples of mapping mash-ups that combine digital data from numerous sourses. Mash-ups built on online maps are proliferating, covering a wide and growing range of topics. As this practice grows, users can start with global coordinates and search the Web for resources—not limited to photos—that have been tagged with latitude and longitude coordinates, and appear as pushpins on interactive maps.

Mapping mash-ups overlay data on digital maps with clickable markers showing specific points of interest. Learners view maps with pushpins indicating locations where they can find photos, Wikipedia articles, podcasts, historical or scientific data, or other user-created data in a variety of formats. Each pin on the map gives a brief explanation about what students see when they zoom in and out on the maps and move from one site to another.

As 21st century learners begin using Web 2.0 tools, they can create mapping mash-ups that incorporate their research, photos, podcasts, or other digital data they wish to share with others around the world. Creating mapping mash-ups that incorporate authentic data, digital photography, voice notes, and location-based research, which learners gather and compile, is an effective way for learners to engage in problem solving, critical thinking, visual literacy, contexts for spatial and cultural differences, and communication skills.

Mapping mash-ups offer researchers and educators new ways of presenting and analyzing data. As the features and functionality of the underlying online maps grow, so too do the opportunities for new combinations of data with maps.

Purpose & Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Plan and implement curricular units in which they create mapping mash-ups to engage learners
  • Assist students in planning and creating mapping mash-ups to share ideas with other learners
  • Share with colleagues numerous examples of how mapping mash-ups can be used in a variety of K-12 settings
  • Use real-world data to encourage high order thinking skills in K-12 or university students
