Case Study #3
After watching a movie on nutrition and obesity, some middle school students started discussing the food served in their school cafeteria. They collectively felt that much of the food that their cafeteria served each day could be leading to obesity among the pre-teens and teens who attended their school. The felt they needed accurate data before they could state their concerns to the principal, parents, and school board members. Their goal is to convince these stakeholders to begin serving more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and salads in place of fried foods, pizza, and other foods high in fat.
Questions to Answer:
- How can they discover the percentage of other students who share their concerns?
- How can they discover the percentage of parents who share their concerns?
- What data regarding school lunches should they collect? How will they find this data?
- What data regarding nutrition should they collect? How will they find this data?

- For how long should they gather these data?
